The Iranian foreign ministry said Araghchi and the Omani leader also discussed security in the Strait of Hormuz and broader Gulf waters, as well as diplomatic efforts to end the Iran–U.S. conflict and ensure regional stability.

Russia’s foreign ministry says that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will travel to Moscow for talks. “We confirm a visit by Araghchi to Russia with the aim of holding talks,” the ministry tells the RIA Novosti news agency. Earlier, Iran’s ISNA news agency quoted Tehran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, saying that Araghchi would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday to “consult with Russian officials regarding the latest status of the negotiations, ceasefire, and surrounding situation.”

Russia’s formal entry into the Iran ceasefire mediation is highly significant. Russia and Iran are strategic partners — Russia has military advisors in Iran, shares intelligence, and is deeply opposed to US military dominance in the Middle East. A Russian-backed framework for ending the Iran-US war would carry different guarantees than a Pakistan-mediated deal. The question is whether the US will engage with Russia as a co-guarantor — deeply unlikely given US-Russia relations.

A source familiar with the matter says Araghchi could return to Pakistan to meet Witkoff and Kushner early next week after completing his trips to Oman and Russia.

The destruction of the Jesus statue in Debel came after a double-tap strike that killed Father Pierre al-Rahi, a Maronite Catholic priest, in another southern Lebanese town last month. Historic Christian churches have also been destroyed by IDF attacks.

The jailing of the two soldiers and the statue’s replacement represent the IDF’s attempt at damage control following the international outcry. Russia has leverage Iran trusts — as a strategic partner, arms supplier, and alternative to Western-dominated international institutions. A Russian-backed Iran peace framework could provide Tehran the security guarantees it needs that the US cannot credibly provide. The critical question: will the US engage with a Russia-backed framework? Given current US-Russia relations, this seems unlikely. But if Russia brokers a deal Iran accepts, the US faces the choice of accepting or rejecting it — and rejection means continued war.
