Tomorrow is the most important day for Lebanon in a generation. The first formal Lebanese-Israeli diplomatic contact since 1983 will take place at the US State Department.

The realities heading in:

• Bint Jbeil is surrounded, white phosphorus is being used, and Nasrallah’s stadium is rubble
• Hezbollah demands the talks be cancelled and says it won’t abide by any agreements
• Israel’s envoy is reportedly instructed to reject a ceasefire at the meeting
• Lebanon’s government is proceeding anyway — in direct defiance of Hezbollah
• The US is facilitating — for the first time acting as Lebanon’s advocate in its conflict with Israel

And yet: Lebanon is talking to Israel tomorrow. For the first time in 43 years.

Whatever tomorrow produces — even a tentative framework, even a shared statement, even just the acknowledgment that both sides sent ambassadors to the same room — Lebanon’s government has taken the most courageous political decision of the post-2006 era.
