BEAUFORT CASTLE SEIZED — GOLANI BRIGADE FLAG RAISED: The IDF seized Beaufort Castle (Qala’at Shaqif) — the iconic medieval fortress on the ridge overlooking the Litani Valley and all of south Lebanon — on Sunday May 31. Netanyahu made a statement in front of an IDF photograph of Beaufort Castle, which was published publicly. The castle’s commanding position over the entire south Lebanon landscape means the IDF now has a permanent strategic observation post from which it can observe all movement throughout south Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley, and the approaches to Beirut. 2. DAHIYEH STRIKES RESUME — US LIFTED RESTRICTION: The Times of Israel confirmed that on Monday June 1, Israel “announced it would renew its large-scale airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, a stronghold of the Iran-backed terror group, after limiting them for weeks at the request of the United States.” This is a critically important confirmation: the US had specifically asked Israel not to strike Dahiyeh, and Israel had been (imperfectly) complying since early May. That restriction has now been lifted. Dahiyeh is returning to the full-scale bombardment environment of the war’s early weeks.

3. IDF SOLDIER STAFF SGT. ADAM TZARFATI, 20, KILLED BY HEZBOLLAH DRONE JUNE 1: A Hezbollah drone killed Staff Sgt. Adam Tzarfati, 20, of the Commando Brigade’s Maglan Unit, from Rosh Ha’ayin, early Monday morning in southern Lebanon — near the newly seized Beaufort Castle. Three others were wounded. This is the second IDF fatality in as many days (a soldier was also killed Sunday). Total Israelis killed since the ceasefire began April 16: 13. Total IDF soldiers killed in Lebanon since March 2: 23+.

4. ROCKETS RAIN ON NORTHERN ISRAEL; KIRYAT SHMONA STRUCK: Hezbollah rockets struck Kiryat Shmona on Sunday/Monday. A local resident was photographed walking past the site struck by a rocket in Kiryat Shmona (AFP/Kena Betancur). Schools have been shut in many border communities. The Nature and Parks Authority closed sites in northern Israel. Home Front Command issued shelter-in-place instructions across the north.

5. EUROPEAN LEADERS CONDEMN IDF ADVANCE: The Times of Israel’s May 31 liveblog headline: “European leaders condemn IDF’s advance into southern Lebanon as rockets rain down on northern Israel.” Multiple European governments condemned the expansion north of the Litani.

6. Netanyahu made a formal statement in front of an IDF photograph of Beaufort Castle. The castle — known in Arabic as Qala’at Shaqif — has symbolic and strategic significance: it was held by the PLO in 1982, then by South Lebanon Army, then by Hezbollah. IDF control of it since 1982 was one of the symbols of the first Lebanon occupation. It was the second fatality in as many days. The slain soldier was named as Staff Sgt. Adam Tzarfati, 20, of the Commando Brigade’s Maglan Unit, from Rosh Ha’ayin. The US position: Having lifted the Dahiyeh restriction and allowed the Litani crossing, the US has materially weakened its own leverage over Israel. If the US cannot reimpose meaningful constraints on Israeli operations, the June 2–3 talks will produce nothing, the ceasefire will formally collapse, and Lebanon faces a return to the full-scale war of March-April at a moment when it is far more devastated than it was then.

⚠️ FINAL ASSESSMENT — JUNE 1, 2026

Today, Monday June 1, is the 46th day of the ceasefire. In 46 days of ceasefire, the IDF has crossed the Litani River, seized Beaufort Castle, killed 2,846+ Lebanese, resumed large-scale Dahiyeh strikes, and the US has lifted its own restriction on attacking Beirut. In the same 46 days, Hezbollah has killed 13 Israelis, fired rockets at Kiryat Shmona, targeted Iron Dome launchers, and killed a 20-year-old IDF soldier this morning with a drone near the newly seized Beaufort Castle. The ceasefire is dead in south Lebanon. It is dying in Beirut.

Tomorrow, June 2, Lebanon and Israel return to the State Department in Washington for the fourth round of political talks. These talks will take place in the shadow of the Israeli flag flying over Beaufort Castle and the smoke rising over Dahiyeh. They will take place as a 20-year-old soldier lies dead. They will take place as Kiryat Shmona residents walk past rocket damage.

Whether anything productive can emerge from talks that occur in these conditions is the defining question of this moment. CIS Security’s assessment is blunt: without an immediate US intervention to halt Dahiyeh strikes and north-of-Litani ground operations, the June 2–3 talks will produce nothing, the ceasefire will formally end before June 29, and Lebanon will face the resumption of the war that has already killed nearly 3,000 of its people.

For everyone in Lebanon: act on the evacuation orders. Leave south Lebanon, the Bekaa, and now Dahiyeh immediately. The airport is operating. Leave now.
